It´s 2016 and things don´t really look the same here any longer. Things have changed and the various changes turns the site into a working masterpiece.
As I´ve previously mentioned the previous theme I used was not completely to my liking. There were stuff I wanted to change. During the last months of 2015 I started working on a redesign. Atmosphere Pro was just released and I was looking forward to using it as my base theme. I started working on it and for me it just didn´t work out. Cue February and Showcase Pro is released. It gave off that pure feeling with what I was looking for. Yes, tweaks would be made but overall I find that a full width design is just right for me. With my love for large images this theme shows them of in a really good way which makes it easier to use.
2016 is thus the year when I choose a theme for the first time and then I am going to work on it, adding, removing, testing stuff and everything. So changes will be made until I am satisfied with every single detail. Maybe not as fast as Calvin Koepke did it before he ended up with his current design but alas, there will be changes during the year.
Starting from scratch
As you can see from my menu I´ve removed the “Portfolio” part of the website. I choose to do this because I wanted to start over from scratch, there will be a portfolio section added with projects and such I´ve been involved in. I just need to find the perfect look for it and as things stand now, having them look like any other normal post is not an option. So it´s a new direction for the portfolio section and items.
My old posts will remain but I´ve turned a new focus. Before the site was all about me, in 2016 I will do my very best to keep it personal, but for my visitors. I´ve gathered quite a bit of knowledge about how to customize Genesis over the years. I do have a decent enough knowledge of CSS do write code examples of some easy-do-it-yourself kind of stuff.
Given my time with WordPress and learning how to develop themes I also have opinions on how to do things. One of my ideas is to write for example what I want to be added to Genesis and what I feel it could do better. Not much I can tell already but there are a few things I´m not completely sure if there is a way to do them.
So I will start to give back to the community I´ve been in for so long. I´m still freelancing as a web & print designer and one of the additions to this site will be a working “what I can do for you” page with prices and examples of what the different help will get you. I´ll start out in a easy to understand manner and then work my way up towards everything that I want to learn and do for people.
Albedo Pro – A Genesis theme for everyone
One of the designs I worked on and thought of using it on this very own site was a theme I called Albedo. I decided not to use it for my own site but it is basically a complete theme. So I just have to clean the codework up and do some final additions. Going with the Studiopress naming sense I also decided to add “Pro” to the title. Nothing mean about it but anyway, I hope the name will make you look forward to it.
Check out the dribbble shot I did of Albedo Pro right here. It´s aiming at being a personal blog theme with focus on the content. But using all white all the time is something that just doesn´t sit well with me. So I decided to fill the white space up a bit. Let me know what you think of the dribbble shot in the comments. Are you excited to be able to download it and fizzle around with it yourself? I hope so. I´m stumped and nervous on how it is going to be received to say the least when I do release it.
Bodywork, or girl look at the font!
I´ve seen StudioPress.com“>Studiopress (affiliate link) use Proxima Nova for ages. I´ve fallen more and more in love with the font. So I decided to move away from the awesomeness that is Google Fonts for this design since frankly, I love Open Sans and Lato, but they are so widely used it´s gotten a bit boring to see them. I use Lato on Deculture, another project of mine. I have worked with Open Sans in the past but at this point I did´t want to go back to it so I had to search on.
Why not go with Proxima Nova then? My reason is simple, I looked around. 280US is a lot of money for me currently and I can not spend such a big amount of money on a single font-family. It is simply to much.
To my rescue, I found a font I could use thanks to Adobe Typekit: Museo Sans. Looking easy on the eyes, but still being quite broad and wide even on smaller screens means a lot of readability. And I´m hoping my eye for reading long lines of text has given me a good choice. I enjoy reading stuff on this site now even more than I did before. I have to thank Brian Gardner for his guide on how to incorporate Typekit fonts into your Genesis driven blog.
To further increase readability I did like Dustin W. Stout and stole a choice Brian Gardner did, setting a line-height to a full 2.0. I´d say the results speak for themselves.
I also really enjoyed the choice Dustin did with giving his headings a slight margin: -10px. I liked the idea, increased the readability of headings a lot. So thanks Dustin for bringing it to my attention.
Color me senseless
I´m a fan of colors. I don´t really have a favorite one and well it hurts when your designing for myself. Jumping around with colors in every design takes a toll on you as a designer. Having a pair of colors you fall back to and use is a must. I don´t have those colors yet. Here in this design I ended up with my favorite drink, Coca-cola being inspiration with it´s lovely red color that you get to see in links and in the body.
I don´t remember where exactly I found my body color of #232525 but it looks stunning on white, I´ll say as much.
Working towards the “perfect” site.
As I opened with, this site is going to see it´s fair share of changes during the year. But this year is the year I will definately work on keeping the design for years to come. Adding sections and seeing how it all works out.
My dream site is a collection of reviews, articles and projects, all by me and getting all the love they all should have. It´s going to be a fun year deciding on how to make it all work together, creating a brand for myself and finally? deciding on a good logotype.
I hope you enjoyed reading this far. Cheers for a nice 2016 and I hope you´re all looking forward to it as much as I do. The future is bright looking and I´m loving it.
